Divorce rates per 1,000 people in India 0.01 according to 2022-23 Data

AR Live News. For centuries, marriage was more about survival than love – securing property, wealth, and alliances. Romantic love became central only in the 18th century, and modern times have further reshaped it into a more equal partnership.

Hindu wisdom: Marriage was considered sacred for seven lifetimes. With no concept of divorce, the Legal experts had to coin a new word “विवाह-विच्छेद” (Vivah-Vichhed). Later, Talaq (from Urdu/Islamic law) and Divorce (from Catholic/English law) entered Indian vocabulary. The beauty of the ancient view was simple- wedlocks were forever.

Highest: Maldives (5.5), Kazakhstan (4.6), Russia (3.9), USA/Canada (2.8)

Lowest: India (0.01), Vietnam (0.2), Sri Lanka (0.2), Peru (0.2)

Clearly, marriage has evolved – from social contract to emotional bond, and at times, a marriage of convenience.

Today- is Marriage a tradition, an institution, or a choice?
